About Me

Hi, I'm City Councilmember

I'm proud to be serving my second term on the Santa Barbara City Council, where I continue to work hard to promote job creation, address our transportation and infrastructure needs, provide affordable housing options, and protect the quality of our neighborhoods and environment. I am running for Mayor to provide the responsive and energetic leadership we need to continue moving our city forward in a positive direction. As your Mayor, I will continue creating economic opportunities for working families and addressing our shortage of workforce housing. I am dedicated to our public health and safety, and to enhancing the well-being of Santa Barbara's residents, who I have considered my neighbors for the last 39 years. Thank you for taking the time to learn about our campaign and I look forward to hearing from you and working with you.

Cathy Murillo has represented Santa Barbara since 2012 where she was the first Latina ever elected to the City Council.

Under Cathy’s leadership on the City Council, Santa Barbara opened a new Children’s Library and increased library hours, updated the Bicycle Master Plan, constructed pedestrian and traffic safety improvements on the Eastside, supported revitalization of the Westside’s neighborhood association, and included environmental protections in the re-commissioned desalination plant.

As your Mayor, Cathy will bring vast experience having served Santa Barbara as Mayor Pro-Tem in 2014, and on both the City Council’s Finance Committee (2012 – 2013) and Ordinance Committee (2014 – present). She offers the unique perspective of having represented the City at-large during her first term and now as the Westside District 3 Council Member.

Her Council liaison assignments include the Santa Barbara Youth Council, Housing Authority Commission, Library Board, Rental Housing Mediation Board, Living Wage Ordinance Committee, Sustainability Committee, Community Choice Energy Committee, Neighborhood Advisory Council, among others.

County-wide and regional assignments include the South Coast Task Force on Youth Safety, Community Action Commission, Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness (C3H), the Cities/County Affordable Housing Task Force, and the MTD Board of Directors. Additionally, she is the Council alternate to all the water supply agencies: Cachuma Operation and Maintenance Board, Cachuma Conservation Release Board, and the Central Coast Water Authority.

Another important regional work project: Murillo serves on the roundtable of The Economic Vitality Team of Santa Barbara County, a countywide economic development collaboration of elected officials, Chambers of Commerce, financial institutions, and businesses. This complements her participation in a collaboration of the Eastside Merchants and Neighborhood Association and SCORE  — a project encouraging small business creation or expansion.

Aside from her duties at City Hall, Murillo co-founded the Pro-Youth Movement, a community forum empowering youth and families, with a focus on gang prevention. She is also active organizing monthly meetings and activities of the Westside Community Group, a neighborhood association engaging residents, businesses, and schools in civics and neighborhood improvement projects.

Cathy grew up in East Los Angeles and came to the Santa Barbara area to attend UC Santa Barbara. She graduated with a degree in Dramatic Art, after which she worked as an artist-in-the-classroom for the Children’s Creative Project, teaching theater arts to elementary school children.

Prior to running for public office, Murillo worked at UCSB as the News and Public Affairs at KCSB Radio. She was a news writer/editor for the Santa Barbara Independent, Los Angeles Times, and Ventura County Star.

Cathy rents a home on the Westside and keep a family of pets, all rescued or adopted from shelters.
