Santa Barbara, CA – Today, Mayor Cathy Murillo’s re-election campaign announced earning the endorsement of the Santa Barbara Young Democrats, cementing her support among young progressives in the city. The endorsement is the second major organizational endorsement in the race for mayor. Last week, Mayor Murillo announced support from the Sierra Club Los Padres Chapter. Together, the two endorsements provide her already formidable campaign with an additional boost of momentum as she continues to consolidate support among Santa Barbara’s important environmental and progressive voters.
“We endorse Mayor Cathy Murillo because she is a proven progressive who works tirelessly to lead our city through our challenges towards a better future,” said Ian Baucke, Director of Policy and Advocacy for the Young Democrats. “She has worked to expand equity and opportunity for all those in our community, constantly fighting for policies that put people first and make Santa Barbara’s local government more just and accountable.”
“It is an honor to have the Santa Barbara Young Democrats endorsement,” said Mayor Murillo. “Young people are the future of this city, and we need to attract and keep as many young people in the city as possible. They create jobs and support our economy. City Council’s new tenant protections and affordable housing policies will make Santa Barbara accessible to the next generation. Further, pursuing the pedestrian and bicycle master plans, will help the goal of keeping young people in the city.”
First elected to the Santa Barbara City Council in 2012, Cathy Murillo was elected Mayor in 2017, becoming the first Latina to hold that office in the city’s history. Over the past decade, Mayor Murillo has helped enact significant housing policies, including tenant protections and increasing the supply of affordable housing.
